Overview & Technology Platform

The purpose of this firmware project was to develop an automated fan solution that allows the user to control the speed of the fan wirelessly, and also has the ability to return automatically to the correct operating condition after being shut down by an unexpected power loss.

The initial hardware platform was the NXP FRDM-MCXA153 Development Board with the FRDM-MC-LVBLDC shield, the fan motor used is the Linix model 45ZWN24 and is a three-phase brushless direct current (DC) motor.

The major challenges associated with this project were how to eliminate the need for position sensors, thus reducing the total Bill of Material (BOM) costs, and how to create a mechanism that saves the operating state of the fan (MSST) when there is an unexpected power loss.


Core Technical Implementation (BLE & MSST)

The firmware utilized the MCUXpresso SDK and integrated two primary wireless and memory technologies:

Six-Step Commutation (BLDC)

The MCXA series PWM and ADC peripherals were configured for sensorless six-step control. The ADC reads the back-EMF of the floating winding to determine the rotor position, removing the need for Hall sensors.

BLE Connectivity

A Wireless UART profile was implemented using the board's Bluetooth Low Energy stack. An iOS/Android IoT Toolbox application sends ASCII command strings (e.g., "SPD=1500") to the target. The firmware parses these strings via the BleApp_ReceivedUartStream callback to update the PWM duty cycle registers.

MSST (State Save)

Leveraging NXP's low-power features, the firmware writes operational parameters (current RPM, cumulative runtime, and fault flags) to the MCU's Flash memory. On power restoration, the bootloader checks this location and automatically restores the previous state without external intervention.

Results and System Validation

Revamped firmware had less than a 50ms closed-loop motor speed response, BLE maintained a stable link out to 20m, stored checksums were consistently validated through 1000 power cycle tests with the MSST mechanism ensuring the recovery of the motor control application was successful.
