We just completed development of an advanced app using Flutter and BLE integration for lithium batteries by aligning with our client's technology preference. Lithium Battery App

Project Summary

We were asked to create a dedicated cross-platform mobile app on behalf of a lithium battery manufacturer.

The app was needed to replace their WeChat mini-app, and the lithium battery system has a BMS (battery management system) which uses the CAN-BUS protocol, and the system also contains a BLE module (Bluetooth Low Energy), which is used for wireless communication with the mobile app.

The purpose of this project was to create a branded production-ready Flutter application (cross-platform) that can be host for iOS & Android devices that allow users to view live battery data in real-time.

Lithium Battery IoT App Development

BLE Integration

Using Flutter BLE libraries, we implemented:

  • Device scanning filtered by service UUID
  • Secure BLE connection with timeout handling
  • Auto-reconnection logic for stability
  • MTU negotiation for optimized packet size
  • Real-time notification subscription

To ensure reliability, we added checksum validation before processing any packet. This prevented corrupted or incomplete data from being displayed.

Technical Approach

To ensure that we could provide a high-performance single code base for both platforms, we chose to use Flutter to develop this application. The structure of the app follows the Clean Architecture principles by separating the communication with the BLE module, the parsing of data from the BMS and the user interface allowing for scalable and maintainable development.

The client provided communication protocol documentation. Our team analyzed:

  • Packet structure (Header, Command, Payload, Checksum)
  • Byte order (big-endian/little-endian)
  • Signed vs unsigned integer values
  • CRC validation logic

We developed a packet parsing class in Flutter that will take the raw HEX data received from the BLE module and output structured battery metrics.

The mobile dashboard displayed:

  • State of Charge (SoC %)
  • Voltage (V)
  • Current (A) with charging/discharging indicator
  • Cycle count
  • Cell voltage status

The UI was designed with a clean, modern Western-style interface, including large SoC indicators, real-time refresh animations, and dark/light mode support.

Testing Strategy

As there was limited access to hardware, the following measures were put in place to facilitate continued software development:

  • Mock BLE simulator for providing sample battery packets
  • A data-injecting layer to allow for testing of parsing in isolation
  • Edge case testing for low battery voltage, high current and error states

To perform final validation, the client shipped us the BMS module and we were able to do real device testing to confirm that the signals were stable and performed adequately.
