Wearable Adhesive Biosensor

Case Study : Wearable Adhesive Biosensor for Physiological Signal Monitoring

The wearable adhesive biosensor has been designed to collect physiological data directly from the human skin. The sensing device consists of a very thin disposable sensing element and a reusable snap-on electronics pod, making for a compact and flexible way to provide some type of wearable health monitoring device.

Sensor

The sensing layer consists of an electrospun PVDF piezoelectric nanofiber membrane adhered to a flexible PET/TPU substrate thus, the sensor can detect very small mechanical signals produced during physiological activity.

The sensor layer also used printed silver nanowire electrodes and a carbon ink force-sensing resistor (FSR) grid in order to obtain better signal detection and pressure sensitivity over the flexible surface.

Analog Signal Processing

As the goal of capturing micro-level signals, the analog signal chain was created around an INA128 instrumentation amplifier therefore, it can provide important opportunities for amplifying microvolt-level signals and the processed signal can be digitized with the ADS1256 24-bit ADC (high-precision measurement) through SPI.

Connectivity Solutions and Embedded System

A single ESP32-S3 microcontroller was used for firmware management and real-time processing of data, as well as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE 5.0) wireless streaming and USB serial communication for testing while developing and debuging the system.

Device Design and Power Options

The device incorporated a medical-grade adhesive layer with a PDMS acoustic coupling for stable skin contact, together with an integrated NFC antenna coil to allow for optional battery free smartphone interrogation in certain applications.

Development Process and Final Prototype

The project went through an organized development process to complete the signal chain verification, test the prototype on skin, incorporate the flexible substrate, and assemble the electronics pod.

The end result was an “investor ready” prototype that could record physiological signals from a person in motion and transmit real-time data, as well as provide full technical documentation and specifications.
