Smart IoT Water Management: From Detection to Full Automation

Overcoming Challenges in the Management of Water Infrastructure

To enhance efficiency, reduce losses, and maintain compliance, today's water systems must use intelligent monitoring and automation.

The ability to detect leaks and anomalies in real-time with Artificial Intelligence (AI) enables the rapid identification and remediation of problems within pipeline networks, thus minimizing A) risks and B) downtime.

The application of Predictive maintenance and the optimization of pumping stations using IoT technology will also enhance operational efficiencies of the entire treatment infrastructure.

For regulatory needs, smart water quality monitoring systems and automated consumption reporting ensure continuous compliance with industry standards. Advanced automation solutions include IoT-enabled smart valves and pump control systems that enable remote and intelligent operations.

Supporting Higher Technical Integration for Scalable Systems

The integration of BACnet and Modbus technically offers a unified dashboard for robust IoT deployments. The use of edge computing enables real-time water anomaly detection.

Connectivity technologies such as NB-IoT and LoRaWAN enable the mass deployments of smart meters.

In addition, the ease of integration with existing SCADA systems and cloud platforms provides end-to-end visibility and control across water management ecosystems.

Core Water Management Assets

Today's decision makers are looking at IoT partners by asking pointed, technical questions about practical deployment problems.

They want expertise in system design of aging pipelines with pressure sensors, ML-based leak detection and water hammer differentiation.

They want to be able to create centralized dashboards that include flow meters, pH sensors, AWS IoT, and mobile alert systems. To be in a strong position, you need to show physical domain expertise, connectivity expertise (LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, 4G/5G), AI-based predictive maintenance, regulatory compliance, and a clear understanding of the sensor to cloud architecture.

We offer end to end development services for the 5 key components of any water network:

1. Pumps (Centrifugal, Submersible, Booster)

Monitoring Parameters:

Discharge pressure (0-16 bar), suction pressure, flow rate (ultrasonic/magnetic), motor current (3-phase, up to 600 A), vibration (10 Hz-1 kHz), bearing temperature, seal leakage.

Control Functions:

Variable frequency drive (VFD) control via 4-20 mA or Modbus, duty-standby alternation, dry-run protection, soft-start interlocking.

IoT Enablement:

Custom vibration/temperature smart sensor (LoRaWAN) retrofitted to legacy pumps, transmitting health metrics every 15 minutes.

2. Tanks (Elevated, Ground, Hydropneumatic)

Monitoring:

Continuous level (ultrasonic, radar, or submersible pressure transducer), overflow alarms, stratification temperature (3-point PT100 array), leak detection (acoustic or conductive cables).

Automation:

Automatic fill valve control, high-high level interlock with pump cut-off, low-low level suction protection.

Custom IoT Device:

Battery-powered LoRa level transmitter with <0.5% full-scale accuracy, transmitting every 5 minutes and immediately on alarm.

3. IoT Monitoring for STP & WTP Systems

We provide end-to-end IoT solutions for Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) and Water Treatment Plants (WTP), enabling real-time monitoring and automation.

For STP, we track inlet flow, BOD, DO, MLSS, RAS flow, and final effluent quality including turbidity, pH, and chlorine. Control includes aerators, VFD blowers, sludge pumps, and UV systems.

For WTP, we monitor turbidity, dosing, filtration, chlorine levels, and clearwell storage, with full integration to chemical dosing pumps via Modbus or pulse signals for precise treatment control.

4. Smart Water Metering (Bulk & Customer)

We provide IoT solutions for bulk and customer water metering using electromagnetic, ultrasonic, and mechanical meters (single-jet, multi-jet, Woltman). Data includes real-time flow, totalized volume (forward/reverse), temperature, and leak detection via low-flow alerts. Our custom IoT device (ESP32-S3 + LoRa) enables low-power pulse counting from existing meters and transmits 15-minute interval and daily consumption data for smart billing and monitoring.

5. Advanced Leak Detection & Unified Water Intelligence Platform

We integrate acoustic, fiber optic, and pressure-based sensing for advanced pipeline monitoring. Hydrophones and accelerometers sample up to 2.5 kHz with on-device FFT to separate leak noise from traffic or valve activity.

Fiber optic DAS/DTS enables long-range temperature and acoustic sensing across 1 km+ pipelines, integrated with third-party interrogators. High-speed pressure transient loggers (50 Hz) detect burst events in real time.

Our unified platform brings together all five categories onto one screen/interface so that you can see what is happening in real-time, view historical analysis of performance, automate controls or receive alerts about possible future failures.

Case Study: Smart Municipal Water Monitoring Transformation

Integrating Multi-Vendor Water Infrastructure into a Unified IoT Platform

A municipal water district operating a fragmented infrastructure with 200 Sensus iPerl meters (FlexNet RF), 15 Grundfos pump stations, 10 Hach water quality analyzers, and 5 Echologics leak detection systems required a unified monitoring solution. Each system previously operated in isolation, limiting visibility and operational efficiency.

In order to resolve the situation, we implemented three distinct IoT gateways with SDR modules specifically designed for communicating via FlexNet, multiple RS-485 ports, and secured by cellular backhaul.

To allow real-time analytics, correlation between systems, and a common set of dashboards all incoming data is sent to our central AWS IoT platform. We created custom drivers to convert data from each vendor into a single format.

Key Outcomes: Leaking water detection in real-time, through vibration analysis, has secured predictive maintenance for pumps. In addition, chlorination control was automated, resulting in an 18% reduction in lost water by the municipality within the first year.

Smart Municipal Water Monitoring

Integration of Popular Third-Party Water Devices

There is no single manufacturer that makes the "perfect" pump, meter or analyzer for all water applications.

With our integration framework you can combine best-of-breed devices and still have one management platform.

We work with the most popular manufacturers in the industry and use their SDKs, APIs and communication protocols to integrate their devices into our system seamlessly.

This means full interoperability for pumps, flow meters, analyzers and controllers; giving you one dashboard for monitoring, control, analytics and predictive maintenance – without vendor lock-in.

Custom IoT Device Development for Water Systems

Off-the-shelf sensors often fail in harsh water environments due to submersion, humidity, and chemical exposure, or they lack required connectivity and long battery life.

We build dedicated IoT devices for specific water applications. Our hardware features ultra-low power STM32 microcontrollers, IP68 sealed enclosures and industrial sensor interfaces such as 4-20 mA, 0-10 V, Modbus RTU and I2C/SPI.

Devices are offered with a variety of power options including long-life Li-SOCl2 batteries, solar with MPPT and loop-powered options.

With FreeRTOS-based firmware, we enable deep sleep efficiency, edge signal processing for leak and vibration detection, OTA updates, and real-world deployments like tank sensors, pump vibration pucks, and multi-parameter water quality sondes.

Custom IoT Gateway Development

The IoT Gateway is the central nervous system of modern water networks, aggregating data from subsystems, running local control logic and talking to cloud SCADA platforms.

Custom gateways with ARM Cortex-A processors, industrial I/O, LoRaWAN, 4G/5G and multi-protocol support including Modbus, BACnet, MQTT and OPC UA.

They leverage Docker and real-time kernels to provide deterministic control, edge analytics, cybersecurity, redundancy, and seamless integration across complex industrial water infrastructure – all built on secure Linux-based stacks.
