Overview

This case study focuses on a recent project undertaken by our client based in Australia. In our first meeting with Mark (the founder of PesaTransfers.com), he discussed his idea for a new fintech company named PesaTransfers, based out of Melbourne.

The overall aim of the company was to allow people to transfer money overseas faster, cheaper and easier than ever before, starting by offering transfers from Australia to Kenya, afterwards, they would begin offering transfers between other countries including Nigeria and Ghana.

They would also support users in the UK, US and Canada to send money quickly and easily to Kenya.

The challenge was to overcome common issues in cross-border payments, such as high fees and delays.

In order to enable instant transfers to M-Pesa accounts, bank accounts and mobile wallets, we needed to develop both mobile and web applications.

Building this ecosystem required us to connect to both Visa Direct and Currencycloud to enable instantaneous global transactions, automatic currency conversions and financial compliance features.

Our responsibility was to design and develop a scalable minimum viable product by creating a secure financial service payment infrastructure and complying with global standards for compliance in multiple currencies in multiple countries.

Introduction

Cross border remittances are a lifeline for millions of families worldwide. Yet, traditional systems remain slow, costly, and fragmented.

PesaTransfers set out to change this by building a real time, compliant, and user friendly remittance platform connecting Australia to Africa, starting with Kenya and later expanding to Nigeria and Ghana.

This case study details how Adequate Infosoft successfully delivered the project using .NET MAUI for cross platform apps and Azure Cloud for hosting and compliance, resulting in a delighted client and a scalable fintech solution.

Client had provided vision details as follows:

To decrease the time of settlement period from days to minutes.

Access On Multiple Platforms:

The client requested that apps be developed for each of the following platforms: mobile (iOS & Android), desktop (windows & mac), web-based.

Compliance Oriented:

The application must include an overall process for compliance with Anti Money Laundering (AML), Know Your Client (KYC), and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).

Scalability:

Be prepared to support multiple currencies, in various regions.

Challenges

The project faced several industry wide hurdles:

  • The legacy systems caused transfer times to take one day to up to three days.
  • Foreign exchange fees are high therefore users lost money on the transaction that was completed.
  • The ecosystem was very fragmented since it consisted of bank accounts; mobile wallets; and M Pesa.
  • Regulatory complexity was a significant obstacle to automating the AML/KYC compliance obligations.

Solution Approach

In the solution approach, Adequate Infosoft proposed a modular, cloud native architecture that contained the following pillars:

  • Utilizing .NET MAUI Cross Platform Development means having one codebase for iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS.

Execution Phases

Phase 0 : Initiation

  • NDA and contract finalization.

Phase 1: Discovery and Architecture (Duration 2 Weeks) of the project will consist of:

  • Finalizing the requirements.
  • Setting up the API sandbox.
  • Designing the architecture with micro services using Azure K8s as the hosting platform.
  • Creating the security flows using TLS 1.3, AES 256 encryption, and JWT Authentication.

Phase 2: UI/UX Design (Duration 2 Weeks):
