Summary

An alarming fact for the African diaspora living in Canada: You can send $500 to Lagos or Nairobi, but the hidden fees could be as high as 15%.

You can send a remittance from Canada to Africa, but your money will usually not arrive for 3-5 business days until your family has to wait nervously.

Afriachange was created to eliminate these issues. Our task was to build a high-velocity remittance engine that combines mid-market exchange rates, real-time compliance (KYC/AML), and instant settlement, all wrapped in a "few clicks" mobile experience.

The result is a market-leading app with over 150,000 cumulative downloads, processing millions in cross-border flow with a 4.7-star rating.

Custom Cross Border Money Transfer App

The Core Problem: Broken Remittance Corridors

African expats in Canada faced three structural failures with incumbents (Western Union, banks, forex desks):

Problem Impact
Predatory spreads Banks added 3-6% markup on CAD/NGN, CAD/KES
Slow settlement 3–5 days for cash pickup; weekends frozen
Opague fees "Zero commission" ads hid poor exchange rates
Firmware C / C++

Client Goal :

A "TransferWise for Africa" – but optimized for volatile currencies (Nigerian Naira, Kenyan Shilling) and mobile-first users.

System Architecture - The three-layer engine

We developed a highly available micro services platform that is hosted on AWS (Canada Central) having an edge cache in Africa for rate delivery.

Layer 1 - User Acquisition & Onboarding (The “Few Clicks” Promise)

Mobile Apps:

Native Android (Kotlin) and iOS (Swift) with Biometric login (FaceID/Fingerprint).

KYC Lite:

We have integrated Persona instead of the traditional 20 min bank KYC forms, performing document capture (passport/driving license) and liveness check, allowing 80% of our customers to complete their KYC in less than 3 min.

Referral Engine:

Includes a built-in part of the sign-up process; the user receives a CAD $5 credit when a friend sends them CAD $100.

Layer 2 - The Transfer Core Level of Transfer

The layer of transfer that enables speed, visibility & transparency

Real-Time Rate Engine

A rust-based service that queries 6 liquidity sources (centralized exchanges included for NGN) every 5 seconds providing real-time mid-market (i.e. actual) rates plus 0.5%-1% transparent profit margin (with no hidden margin fees).

Instant Quote Cache

Rate cached for 30 seconds and if user seeks to initiate transfer within the 30 seconds quoted, rate will be held/protected against Naira (NGN) volatility.

Payout Rails:

Nigeria (Currency: NGN)

Direct API integrations with 3 of Nigeria's largest banks (GTBank, Access Bank & UBA) allowing for instantaneous bank credit (60% of all Nigeria payments settle/clear in less than 2 minutes).

Kenya (Currency: KES)

Call to API for M-Pesa where funds are settled as mobile money.

Ghana, Mexico, & Australia

Local payout partners (e.g. Interac in Australia for electronic payments & SPEI in Mexico)

Layer 3: Adherence & Numbers (The Nuisance Enabler)

Automated AML (Anti Money Laundering) Screening:

All transactions over CAD 1,000 will be reviewed against Canadian Financial Transactions (FINTRAC) & Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions/No Avoidance List (via ComplyAdvantage). If a suspicious flow occurs, then a 30 minute hold will be placed on the transaction along with an SMS verification.

Transaction Velocity Limits:

New users will have a maximum daily limit of CAD 2,000. Verified users will have a maximum daily transaction limit of CAD 15,000 (utility bill is required for verification).

Feature Deep-Dive: "Send and Receive Money" Unpacked

The user flow had to be frictionless – here’s how we engineered each step:

  • User selects destination (Nigeria, Kenya, etc.) → App fetches live rate from Layer 2.
  • Enters CAD amount → Instantly shows recipient's NGN/KES amount (no surprises).
  • Adds recipient bank/M-Pesa details → Saved for future sends.
  • Pays via Interac e-Transfer (Canada) → Our system monitors the user's email for the Interac deposit confirmation.
  • Fx Execution: Once Interac clears (5-15 min), we execute the fx trade and trigger payout APIs.
  • Push Notification: "Money sent! Your family will receive it in < 2 minutes."
  • Recipient side: No app needed for bank/M-Pesa – they get an SMS with the amount and sender name.

Resolving Engineering Roadblocks

Roadblock #1: Naira Volatility (5% to 10% intraday fluctuations)

We added a rate validity period, users will need to complete their payment in ten minutes or the application would inform them that the rate has changed and they would need to reconfirm it.

We have created a small dynamic buffer (1.5% additional liquidity reserves) of CAD to help with potentially sudden devaluation of the NGN.

Roadblock #2: Slow Interac Verification (Canadian cheque transfer system)

Instead of checking the bank every minute, we leverage Flinks API to help with instant bank login verification.

The user authenticates their bank (Scotiabank/TD/RBC) using OAuth and we can see those funds immediately (within seconds) rather than waiting hours to see funds.

Roadblock #3: Establishing Trust Without Physical Locations

We also created a live chat (response time goal of sixty seconds or less) and a "Rate Guarantee" badge that displayed how much our clients saved using us versus Western Union. For example, "You Saved $23.45."

Client Happiness & Market Leadership

  • Customer acquisition cost: CAD $3.20 (industry average is $15-20)
  • Market share in CAD→NGN corridor: 12% (trailing only WU and Ria)

Client testimonial

“Teams built a fast, smooth, easy-to-use financial technology app (FTD) that could be downloaded and started in just 2 minutes. It also offers rate visibility and has never missed a payment to users in Nigeria, our customers call the app magic. This awesome, effective architecture has us now planning on moving into Europe and UK”

- CTO, Afriachange

Here's why the customer mentions they are "very satisfied":

  • No maintenance ,no down time on production, Naira volatility does not effect.
  • Simple to add new corridors (ex. Adding a new corridor like Uganda takes only two weeks - Only required to plug in new payout API).
  • High ratings resulting in organic growth (The application's ease of use leads to "word of mouth" and reduced Cost To Acquire Customers).

Conclusion: The Blueprint for Diaspora Fintech

Afriachange achieved success by addressing the real-life challenges faced by African emigrants.

Rather than reproducing Western Union’s model of money transfer, we focused on providing solutions that included maximum reliability around the last mile of the transaction, from sender via mobile networks and from receiver via access to cash. These three pillars have been crucial to our growth:

  • Providing transparent live rates (with no hidden fees);
  • Providing instant settlements (via direct bank communications and/or mobile payment networks)
  • Establishing community trust through local support and familiarity (page-sharing technology, customer referrals, etc.).

This case study demonstrates how important it is for any fintech company targeting the diaspora market to meet its customers’ needs with regard to speed, transparency, and expertise when transferring money across international borders.
